Most smart home automation is a party trick. Making the lights turn purple when a song plays is fun, but it doesn't make anyone safer. A small number of automations do real work, and they all share one shape: they act in the seconds when a person would be too slow, asleep, or simply not home.
These are the twelve worth the effort, roughly in order of how much they matter.
Deterrence and occupancy
1. Randomised presence lighting
Not a timer. Timers give you away — the same lamp at the same minute every night reads as "nobody home" to anyone watching for two evenings.
The version that works varies both which lights come on and when, inside plausible hours, and follows sunset rather than the clock so it drifts naturally through the year.
2. Arrival lighting on the approach
Someone steps onto the walk or driveway after dark, the exterior light and the nearest interior light come on. It makes the house look attended, and when it's you coming home with your hands full, you get a lit path to the door.
3. Away-mode escalation
When the system is armed away and something moves inside, do more than send a notification: turn the lights on in that zone, bump recording quality, start a clip. Lights coming on inside a supposedly empty house is one of the strongest signals a person can get that they've been noticed.
Making alerts trustworthy
4. Cross-sensor confirmation
The biggest source of nuisance alerts is one sensor deciding on its own. Require agreement before escalating — a motion sensor and a door contact, or motion in two adjacent zones.
This is the automation that decides whether you trust your system or mute it, and a muted system protects nobody. It's also genuinely hard to tune well, which is most of what we do during setup and the weeks after.
5. Recording quality on demand
Run cameras at a moderate bitrate normally and switch to maximum quality the moment a person is detected. You get evidence-grade footage of the part that matters and weeks more retention on the same drive.
6. Doorbell to the nearest screen
A doorbell press should put the camera view on whatever screen is closest — wall tablet, TV, phone. Answering your door shouldn't require finding an app.
Locks and access
7. Auto-lock on a delay. Never auto-unlock.
Auto-locking a few minutes after a door closes fixes the most common real security failure in any home: the door nobody locked.
Don't auto-unlock on approach. Geofences are imprecise, phones get stolen, and an automation that opens your front door because a phone came within fifty metres has quietly undone the lock you paid for.
8. One-tap goodnight and leaving routines
A single action that checks every door and window, tells you what's open, and locks what it can. The value is the report — "the side door is unlocked" is something you'd never learn walking past it.
9. Guest and contractor access that expires
Time-boxed codes that stop working on their own, with every use logged. Far better than a key under the mat or a code you meant to change six months ago.
Safety, where this genuinely saves lives
10. Smoke and CO response
An alarm should do more than make noise. On smoke or CO:
- every light in the house to full, including the path to the exits
- exit doors unlocked, so nobody is fighting a smart lock in smoke
- HVAC shut down so it stops circulating it
- a critical notification that overrides silent mode
Seconds and visibility are what matter. This is the highest-value automation on this page and the one almost nobody has set up.
11. Water leak shutoff
Leak sensors under the washer, water heater, dishwasher and any basement fixture, wired to a motorised valve on the main. Ontario homes flood from burst supply lines and failed water heaters far more often than they're broken into, and the damage is routinely five figures.
If you automate one thing that isn't security, make it this.
12. Freeze protection
Interior temperature dropping below about 5C while you're away — a furnace failure in February — is an emergency alert, not a notification. Frozen pipes are a whole-house event.
The ones to skip
- Auto-unlock on geofence. Covered above. Don't.
- Disarming because a phone is present. Phones get stolen alongside keys.
- Voice commands that unlock or open anything without a second factor.
- Notifying on every motion event. This is how people end up muting the system. Confirmed, unusual, or safety events only.
Where the automations run is not a detail
An automation that lives in a vendor's cloud stops when your internet does. That's an annoyance for a lighting scene. It's unacceptable for smoke response, leak shutoff or alarm escalation — because the storm that takes out your power and your connection is exactly the night you need those to fire.

What are the best home security automations? Beyond the siren: all lights to full brightness, exit doors unlocked, HVAC off so it stops moving smoke through the house, and a critical notification that overrides silent mode. This needs to run locally so it still works during a power or internet disruption.
Do home automations work without internet? Only if they run locally. Cloud automation platforms stop when the connection does. A local system keeps running — you lose remote control and notifications until the link returns, but the house itself keeps behaving correctly.
How do I stop getting too many false alerts? Require two independent signals before escalating, exclude zones that pick up passing traffic, and separate your notification tiers so routine motion is logged but not pushed. Most alert fatigue traces back to a single oversensitive sensor allowed to notify on its own.
