Which smart lock should you actually buy?

The lock that matters is the one that still opens at −20 °C with a dead battery and a phone you left inside. Everything else — the app, the voice assistant, the auto-unlock — is convenience layered on top of that, and it is where almost all the marketing goes.

Here is what actually decides whether a smart lock is a good buy for a Canadian house.

First: a smart lock is not a stronger lock

Worth being direct, because the category name misleads people.

A smart lock replaces how a deadbolt is operated, not how strong it is. The bolt, the strike plate and the door frame are what resist force, and they are unchanged. If someone is willing to kick a door, a smart lock changes nothing about that outcome.

What a smart lock genuinely gives you:

  • No key to copy, lose, or leave under a mat.
  • Codes you can issue and revoke — a dog walker, a cleaner, a contractor, each with their own.
  • A record of who came and went, and when.
  • Automatic locking, which removes the most common failure in home security: the door nobody locked.
  • Alerts on failed attempts.

That fourth one is the underrated one. The most common way a house gets entered is an unlocked door, and a lock that locks itself fixes exactly that.

The cheapest security upgrade in most homes is a longer strike-plate screw — three-inch screws into the frame stud rather than the half-inch ones that ship in the box. It costs a few dollars and it does more against forced entry than any lock in this article. Do that regardless of what else you buy.

The five questions that actually decide it

1. Will it fit your door?

The most common reason a smart lock gets returned. Check three things before buying anything:

  • Backset — the distance from the door edge to the centre of the bolt hole, usually 2⅜" or 2¾".
  • Door thickness — most locks handle 1⅜" to 1¾"; older Canadian doors sometimes sit outside that.
  • Bore hole — standard is 2⅛". Non-standard means drilling.

Measure before you order, or have whoever is installing it measure.

2. How does it behave in a Canadian winter?

This is where generic buying guides written elsewhere fall down.

  • Cold destroys battery life. Alkaline cells lose a large fraction of their usable capacity below freezing. A lock rated for a year indoors will not give you a year on an exposed north-facing door in Ontario. Lithium AA cells hold up far better in cold and are worth the extra cost on any exterior lock.
  • Exposure matters more than the rating. A lock under a covered porch has an easy life. One on a door facing the driveway with no overhang gets freezing rain directly on the keypad.
  • Touchscreens and gloves. Capacitive keypads and winter gloves are a poor combination. Physical buttons are better in January, which is not a consideration in most reviews.
  • Ice in the bolt path. A door that swells or a frame that shifts seasonally makes the motor work harder, drains batteries faster, and eventually fails to throw. If your deadbolt is stiff to turn by hand today, fix the door before automating it — a motor will not do better than your wrist.

3. What happens when the battery dies?

Every smart lock's real failure mode. Ask specifically:

  • Is there a physical key override? Most have one. Keep that key somewhere that is not inside the locked house.
  • Are there emergency contacts to jump the lock from an external battery? Many locks expose terminals for a 9V.
  • How much warning do you get? A good lock warns for weeks. A bad one dies between one use and the next.
  • Does it fail locked or unlocked? It should fail locked. Confirm this.

Set a calendar reminder to change batteries every autumn, before the cold. It is the single most useful piece of smart lock maintenance advice there is.

4. Which protocol — and does it need wifi?

This determines whether the lock keeps working when your internet does not.

Avoid a cloud-only wifi lock if you can. It means your front door depends on a company's servers being up and their app continuing to exist. Z-Wave, Zigbee and Matter all talk to a hub in your house, so the lock keeps working during an outage and keeps working if the manufacturer moves on.

5. Does it integrate with your security system?

A lock that only talks to its own app is a keypad. A lock connected to your security system is part of a system:

  • Auto-lock every door when you arm. No more checking the back door.
  • Unlock on arrival, verified against your phone or a tag.
  • Alert on failed attempts — repeated wrong codes at 3 AM is a signal.
  • Unlock automatically on a smoke alarm, so a door is not what stops you or the fire service getting out or in.

That last one is a genuine safety function, not a convenience, and it only exists if the lock and the alarm are on the same system.

  4. Keep a physical key off-property — a neighbour, a car, a lockbox.
  5. Connect it to the security system, or you have bought a keypad.
  6. One lock first. Live with it through a winter before doing every door.
